On Thursday, an eleven year old Paraguayan girl who was denied an abortion gave birth to baby girl by cesarean in a Red Cross hospital in Asuncion.
The little girl was repeatedly raped and impregnated by her stepfather when she was ten years old. When the mother of the girl requested an abortion, Paraguayan authorities denied that request because abortions are banned in Paraguay, except when the mother’s life is in danger.
An estimated six hundred girls fourteen years of age or under become pregnant each year in Paraguay. Being a victim of rape or being a child does not qualify a young person for an abortion in the conservative Catholic nation.
The stepfather has been arrested and is currently awaiting trial and the girl’s mother was charged with negligence. The girl and her grandmother have petitioned the court for rights to the baby.
