Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said on Wednesday that, “There will never be a Gay pride parade in my city,” adding, “Let them go and do it in Milan, or in front of their own homes”.
Brugnaro wants to ban the parade all together because he believes they are the “height of kitsch,” or the height of of poor taste.
Brugnaro’s comments come after banning nearly forty nine children’s books that do not promote “traditional” family values from Venice elementary schools.
The Italian government has had a long history of trying to fighting to establish the legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Despite the fact that several bills on civil unions or the recognition of rights to unregistered couples have been introduced into the Parliament in the last twenty years, none has ever been approved.
