Egyptian billionaire says he has considered buying an island to help house refugees

Egyptian billionaire, Naguib Sawiris, says he has considered buying an island in the Mediterranean to help house refugees fleeing conflict.

Sawiris in a tweet asked, “Greece or Italy sell me an island, ill call its independence and host the migrants and provide jobs for them building their new country,” adding in second tweet, “Crazy idea .. Maybe but at least temporary until they can return to their countries ??!!”

Sawiris, is said to be worth $2.9 billion and is the owner of the company Orascom TMT, which operates mobile networks across some African and Middle Eastern nations. Orascom TMT is Egypt’s largest employer.

It is unclear at this time if either government is considering his proposal. According to Sawiris, an island off Greece or Italy would cost between ten million and one hundred million dollars.

  1. If Mr. Naguib Sawiris is willing and able to help these unfortunate refugees find a peaceful sanctuary, it behooves all governments involved to help Mr. Sawiris to make it happen.
May God bless you, Mr. Sawiris!!
