Egyptian security forces mistook a tourist convoy for militants that they were chasing on Sunday.
Security forces opened fire on the caravan of tourists killing at least twelve people and injuring ten others, including Mexican tourists and their Egyptian tour guides.
Mexico’s foreign ministry said that at least two Mexicans were killed.
Egyptian police and military were chasing militants near the Libyan border when security forces accidentally open fired on the tourist convoy.
The Egyptian interior ministry said that there would be an investigation into why the tourists convoy entered a restricted area using unlicensed cars.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Twitter said, “Mexico condemns these deeds against our citizens and has demanded an exhaustive investigation of what has occurred”.
