A three year old toddler has been diagnosed with adult onset type 2 diabetes, the youngest person to ever receive such a diagnosis.
The Houston, Texas child is said to weigh roughly seventy seven pounds, doctors say that a healthy weight for a three year old child is roughly thirty to thirty nine pounds.
Dr Michael Yafi, of the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology at the University of Texas, said that this case highlights the extent of the global epidemic of diabetes and the country’s poor nutritional habits.
Yafi said that the “reversal of type 2 diabetes in children is possible by early screening of obese children, early diagnosis, appropriate therapy and lifestyle modification”.
Doctors say that they are finding themselves diagnosing more young people with type 2 diabetes than ever before.
