US bar owner ordered to pay $400,000 in damages after banning transgender people

An Oregon bar owner has been ordered to pay $400,000 in damages after banning a group of transgender people from his place of business.

Chris Penner, owner of the P Club, asked T-Girls founder Cassandra Lynn to keep herself and the group away from his bar after the women had met there every Friday night for roughly two years.

Penner told the court that people were incorrectly assuming that the P Club was a gay bar or ‘tranny’ bar adding that his sales suffered as a result.

In 2013, the Oregon state Bureau of Labor and Industries ordered the penalty against Penner citing that he violated a law that prohibits discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Penner reportedly left the group two voice messages telling them to stop visiting the bar because his business had declined in the eighteen months that the group had made it their meeting place.
