Seventeen people attempting to reach Greece from Turkey have drowned after their boat sank in the waters on Sunday.

Five women, including five children believed to be Syrian nationals were killed aboard the boat that police said left from the village of Gumusluk near the Turkish resort town of Bodrum.

Dogan news agency reported that those who drowned were trapped in the boat’s cabin as it sank and that twenty people who were on the deck wearing life jackets, survived.

Greece has seen over 300,000 people make this dangerous journey so far this year.
