Indonesian government approves chemical castration for child sex offenders

The Indonesian government approved on Tuesday that child sex offenders will be chemically castrated as an additional punishment.

President Joko Widodo voiced his approval for the law on the country’s cabinet secretariat website.

According to official government figures, in 2014  five thousand and sixty six cases of child sex abuse occurred throughout Indonesia and officials said these numbers are steadily growing each year.

Government officials stressed that they support chemical castration as an additional punishment to serving time in jail, which can be sentences as lengthy as fifteen years in the country’s prison system.
