A shigella outbreak in San Jose California has made an estimated eighty people sick, including sending twelve of them to the intensive care unit at a hospital.
The outbreak occurred at the Mariscos San Juan Restaurant in downtown San Jose. People began to report symptoms last Saturday.
The shigella infection is an intestinal disease caused by a family of bacteria known as shigella. The main symptom of the infection is diarrhea, which often is bloody. Other symptoms include fever and abdominal pain.
Health officials said that fifteen people so far have tested positive for shigella.
According to the CDC, an estimated 500,000 Americans are sickened with shigella every year.
Shigella can be passed through direct contact with stool, contaminated food or by drinking or swimming in contaminated water.
