A Virginia drag queen performer says that he was a victim of a hate crime as a group of men attacked him while riding his bicycle home from work on Saturday night.
Ryan Cowden told authorities that after leaving his job at the Patrick Henry Mall while still in full make-up, one of the attackers tripped him and slammed his head into the sidewalk.
Cowden posted his injuries to social media, at which time, he said, “I never thought I would actually be involved in a hate crime but last night I was on my way home from work and these guys were snickering at me.Then out of nowhere took me by the back of my hair and slammed my face into the sidewalk”.
“I want everyone in Hampton Roads to be safe and make yourself more aware of the dangerous situation than I did because I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I am not going to change for anyone so ignorant people can get over it,” Cowden added.
Police said that they are investigating the incident as a felony assault.
