Two days after escaping a detention center on Christmas Island, a Kurdish-Iranian refugee has been found dead.
Fazel Chegeni, in his thirties and said to have suffered documented mental health problems, escaped the North West Point detention center over the weekend.
Authorities said that his body was discovered on Sunday. The cause of death is unknown at this time.
Chegeni had been detained in detention centers since 2010. Friends of Chegeni told reporters that he had become suicidal.
Refugee advocates said that Chegeni is yet another example of a needless detention death of a person who should never have been in detention.
