Beijing authorities shut down an art exhibition that combats violence against women

Organizers of an art exhibition to combat violence against women reported that Beijing authorities shut down the event just hours before it was set to open.

The event, which focuses on domestic violence and gender equality, was set to open along side the the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Artists for the exhibit consist of both men and women featuring pieces that speak out against sexual harassment, sexual abuse of children and the physical abuse of women, among other topics.

Organizers believe the event was shut down due to “pressure from higher authorities”.
