Pro-Kurdish lawyer and human rights activist killed in Turkey

Pro-Kurdish lawyer and human rights activist, Tahir Elci, was killed in Turkey while making a press statement on Saturday.

 

Elci was giving a statement about the damage that occurred to a one thousand five hundred year old Four Legged Minaret Mosque during clashed between Turkish security forces and Kurdistan Workers’ Party militants.

 

The Dogan News Agency aired footage where gunshots could be heard showing officers responding with gunfire. Footage showed Elci lying on the ground after he and two journalist attempted to escape the intensifying gunfire.

 

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack saying, “This might be an assassination against Tahir Elci”.

 

Over two thousand people gathered to protest the killing of Elci in Istanbul on Saturday. Protesters were met with water cannons and tear gas as police were ordering protesters to disperse.

 

Protesters said that they are angry with Turkish security Forces calling them extremely heavy handed. Demonstrators also called Erdogan a thief and a killer.
