Canadian Pastor sentenced to life in prison with hard labor in North Korea

On Wednesday a Canadian Pastor was sentenced to life in prison with hard labor after being accused of “crimes against the state” by North Korea’s Supreme Court.

The Light Korean Presbyterian Church Pastor, Hyeon Soo Lim, has been detained since February on charges including harming the dignity of the supreme leadership, trying to use religion to destroy the North Korean system, disseminating negative propaganda about the North to the overseas Koreans, and helping United States and South Korean authorities lure and abduct North Korean citizens.

North Korean state prosecutors sought the death penalty during the ninety minute court hearing in which Lim kept his eyes mainly to the floor and spoke in a quiet subdued voice.

Canadian officials said that they have had no contact with Lim although they have requested to see him in order to verify his health and well-being.
