China’s parliament passed into law the country’s first legal protection against domestic violence

On Sunday, China’s parliament passed into law the country’s first legal protection against domestic violence.

The new law, which covers unmarried people who cohabit but does not protect gay couples, prohibits any form of domestic violence, including psychological abuse, and helps to make the process far easier to obtaining restraining orders.

Women’s right activists said that an estimated forty to fifty thousand domestic violence complaints are filed every year but that the reported numbers are actually low with real domestic violence cases toppling over twenty five percent of the population.

To date, there are no legal protections for same-sex couples.
