Zimbabwe outlaws child marriage

The constitutional court in Zimbabwe on Wednesday officially outlawed child marriage in an effort to once and for all end the practice that affects too many children in African nations.

Under the new law neither a boy or a girl will be allowed to marry until they reach eighteen years of age.

Judge Vernanda Ziyamb told the court that the ruling is effective immediately regardless of a child’s customs or religion.

The lawyer, Tendai Biti,  who represented the two women who initially brought the child marriage cases before the court, told reporters that, “It is a great day for women and the girl child,” adding, “Parliament should now legislate for tougher jail sentences,” for those who violate the law.
