The International Olympic Committee has ruled that transgender athletes will be permitted to compete in the games without having to undergo sex reassignment surgery first.
In documents released by the IOC they said, “To require surgical anatomical changes as a pre-condition to participation is not necessary to preserve fair competition and may be inconsistent with developing legislation and notions of human rights”.
According the IOC, under new guidelines, a male transitioning to a female must declare they are doing so four years prior to competing and they must also have low levels of testosterone in their system.
For a female transitioning to male, he will be allowed to compete in the male category without any restrictions.
Individuals found ineligible to compete in female events due to high testosterone levels will still be allowed to compete in male events.
