At least thirty three people, including ten children, drowned off the coast of Turkey

At least thirty-three people, including ten children, drowned on Saturday off the coast of Turkey after an overcrowded boat full of refugees capsized.

 

The mayor of Ayvacık, Mehmet Ünal Şahin told local media, “I am afraid the numbers will rise as divers continue the search,” adding that local residents, “woke up to the sound of screaming migrants”.

 

The Turkish coast guard said so far they have rescued seventy-five people.

 

According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, the victims were Afghani, Myanmar and Syrian nationals.
