A Connecticut couple is under arrest after police said that they locked their adopted children inside of the bathroom as a form of punishment.
Forty-five-year-old, George Barnes and forty-seven-year-old, Nancie Barnes were arrested on Thursday after school officials reported the abuse to law enforcement.
Police said that the children were confined to the bathroom for long periods of time, forced to stand and read.
According to investigators the children, between the ages of nine and eighteen years old, were allowed out of the bathroom to attend school and sleep but were forced to return to the bathroom the next morning.
The Department of Children and Families in Connecticut said in a statement that the couple was licensed. They had received both criminal and child welfare background checks prior to obtaining that license and caring for the children.
The Barnes couple is facing charges including cruelty to persons, second-degree unlawful restraint, and risk of injury to a minor. They are due back in court on February 24.
