Indonesia’s Muslim leaders on Wednesday called on the government to make gay sex and the publicizing of LGBT activities illegal.
The request submitted in a statement by the Indonesian Ulema Council and leaders of other Islamic organizations comes after the government urged the United Nations Development Program to deny funding to programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
The statement went on to say that the Indonesian Ulema Council supports the government’s rejection of supporting foreign funding of LGBT causes calling for bans on promoting and providing funds for LGBT activities in Indonesia.
Islamic leaders believe that foreign funding would prompt LGBT activists to push for same-sex marriage rights.
Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that it is wrong to campaign for same-sex marriage adding the government respects an individual’s rights for sexual expression, they should not be encouraged.
