A court in Saudi Arabia sentenced a man who professes to be an atheist to ten years in prison and two thousand lashed after he posted hundred of tweets on Twitter denying God’s existence and criticizing religion.
The Saudi Arabian newspaper Al-Watan reported on Saturday that the Saudi religious police, who monitor social media, found more than six hundred tweets posted by the twenty-eight-year-old dissenter.
According to the newspaper, the unnamed man refused to repent for the tweets and said that he had the right to assert his opinions.
Along with ten years in prison and two thousand lashes, the man was also fined the equivalent of over five thousand US dollars.
Recent surveys among the country’s younger people suggest that atheism is on the rise in the kingdom despite any state enforced ban of a non-belief system.
