A Chinese elevator maintenance crew has been arrested in the city of Xi’an after a woman’s deceased body was discovered in an elevator which had its power improperly cut off over a month ago.
The Gaoling district government said in a statement that two maintenance workers turned off the power source on January 30 to the elevator in a residential building after they were called to check on a glitch.
After the maintenance crew returned on March 1 they found the woman’s corpse in the elevator.
The forty-three-year-old woman was a resident of the building living alone. According to authorities, the victim also believed to have mental health issues starved to death in the elevator.
Officials said her death was caused by the gross negligence on the part of the maintenance crew and is a case of involuntary manslaughter.
