Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday announced the the atrocities committed by the Islamic State group against Christians and other minority religious groups constitutes genocide.
The announcement is likely to have little impact on the United States military effort against the terror group but could be the first steps in bringing members of the terrorist organization to International Criminal Court.
Kerry at a news conference said, “In my judgment, Da’esh (or the Islamic State group) is responsible for genocide against groups in areas under its control, including Yazidis, Christians and Shia Muslims,” adding, “Da’esh is genocidal by self-proclamation, by ideology and by actions”.
The declaration of genocide, due to its non-binding nature, does not require the United States to ramp up military activity against the Islamic State group. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the declaration was largely rhetorical, but also added that the United States could begin helping the International Criminal Court investigate war crimes.
