Brazil on Thursday said that threats made against the country by the Islamic State group months ago are real.
In November a Twitter post featuring a French national, Maxime Hauchard was sent to Brazilian security with the message, “Brazil you are our next target”. Counterterrorism Director Luiz Alberto Sallaberry confirmed the threat was genuine.
Sallaberry told reporters that they have seen a rise in a number of Brazilian citizens sympathizing with the Islamic State group.
According to Sallaberry, the country has taken a number of steps to avert any potential terrorist attacks.
An estimated fifty thousand tourists are expected in the country for the Olympic Games in August. According to organizers, roughly eighty-five thousand security personnel will be deployed to the games.
