Protesters in Egypt rallied on Friday to denounce the government’s decision to give control of two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia staging one of the largest demonstrations inside of the country in over a year.
Roughly two thousand people in two demonstrations faced police in riot gear spraying tear gas to disperse protesters. Video footage from one demonstration in Cairo showed protesters chanting, “The people demand the fall of the regime”.
According to authorities in Egypt, the islands are actually Saudi Arabian territory and were only considered Egyptian property through agreements in the 1950s.
Protesters plan to demonstrate again on April 25.
