A new report released on Tuesday by UNICEF indicates one in every five suicide bombers used by the terrorist group Boko Haram in the last two years been a child, usually a girl.
In 2015, the group used forty-four children in suicide attacks using children as young as eight-years-old.
The United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria, Toby Lanzer told reporters that Boko Haram’s use of children as suicide bombers “really beggars belief,” adding, “I cannot think of anything more horrifying”.
According to the government of Cameroon, the country saw the highest number of attacks involving children with most of the suicide bomber being girls between the ages of thirteen and fifteen years.
Witnesses reported that the terrorist organization invokes a specific program teaching women and girls to be bombers.
The report further indicates that at least 221.3 million children have been forced out of their homes.
