Pakistan: Farmers protest for land rights

Thousands of farmers protesting for land rights in the Okara district of the Punjab province were met by riot police, tear gas, and arrests.

Witnesses said one protester, a seventeen-year-old boy, was killed after having a bad reaction to being gassed by police.

Four thousand demonstrating farmers were arrested who are tenants on military-owned farms.

According to several tenants of the farmlands, farmers are demanding ownership of twenty-seven-thousand hectares of farmland currently owned by the military. Farmers said that their families have lived and worked on these lands for generations.
